Review: Lunch at The Boarding House Dining Rooms, Halesworth

Lunch at the Boarding House Dining Rooms, Halesworth is well worth the twenty minute drive from Kingfisher Cottage, Southwold. We had the pleasure of attending an 85th birthday celebration there and had a fantastic meal. The styling is modern, with a nod to Scandinavian, and there are lots of interesting…

Review: Lunch at Darsham Nurseries

After years of talk, we recently went for lunch at Darsham Nurseries (https://darshamnurseries.co.uk), on a rather gloomy winter day. The cafe here has developed an excellent reputation with great reviews in the national press. It’s a short 15 minutes drive from Kingfisher Cottage, Southwold (https://southwoldholidaycottage.co.uk), back towards Ipswich on the…

About The Area

Southwold offers something for everyone, from families with young children to couples looking for a romantic retreat. The High Street has a number of independent stores from clothing boutiques, to delicatessens and a family owned butchers. Adnams' flagship store is at the top end of the High Street, close to the well-equipped children’s play-area, Electric Picture Palace and award winning Southwold Museum.

Southwold Pier has panoramic views over the town and out to sea. Only a few minutes walk from Kingfisher Cottage, visitors can enjoy its cafes, Tim Hunkin arcade machines and shops. A putting green, the boating lake and secluded Covehithe beach are nearby. The pier and Harbour are linked by the Promenade, with its line of brightly coloured beach huts, and a short stroll across the sand dunes.

At Southwold's beautiful working Harbour it is possible to buy locally caught fish, visit the old lifeboat station or practice for the World Crabbing Championships. There are numerous boat-trips. Traditional fishing boats sail along the estuary, the ferry boat rows guests across to picturesque Walberswick, and Coastal Voyager jets out to the nearby Seal Colony

Walking back from the harbour there are stunning views across Southwold common and beyond. "The Pitstop" hosts a further outdoor childrens' play area and tennis courts. Alternatively, play a round of golf at Southwold Golf Club, watch a local sports match or fly a kite.

Southwold has a fine selection of public houses serving Adnams Ales, wines and spirits from its Copper House Distillery. There are a wide range of cafes, ice-cream parlours, chocolatiers and restaurants serving regional specialities such as Alder Carr ice-cream, fish from the Lowestoft Old Smoke House, and Two Magpies award winning bread.

A number of popular attractions are within driving distance. There are nature reserves at Dunwich Heath and Minsmere, and boat trips along the Norfolk Broads. Aldeburgh and Snape Maltings attract shoppers and concert goers. Children will love the Oasis Camel Park, Beccles heated Lido, summer Southwold Maize maze as well as the award winning BeWilderwood ,and Pleasurewood Hills theme park.
